October Fun

Halloween
October has gone by so fast. A big thank you to everyone for helping us celebrate Halloween!  It was a very festive week for all of the children.  More photos can be found on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Talk About Trees
During October each cohort enjoyed a visit from Joan and the Talk About Trees program. We counted the rings to see how old a tree was and learned more about what trees need to grow. Teacher Joan will   visit again the first week in November and help us learn about the lifecycle of trees.
Garden Work and Harvest
Our classes enjoy keeping the garden tidy and watering the plants.  We recently got to harvest our tomatoes and herbs and make a pizza!  The students did a great job carefully picking the bounty.
They love using tools and the wheelbarrows, and feel proud that they cleaned up the garden beds.  This month we will work on getting our garden ready for winter.

November

Themes this month

  • Families
  • Thanksgiving
  • Community

This month we are excited to learn about our students, their families and the community we live in.  We will be talking to the class about being thankful, the importance of good friends, family and community. Each November and December our school works together with St. David’s, to collect food or products that can help our community. This year St. David’s is collecting items for their Little Red Wagon to help the homeless in our community. It will be really nice for our students to see that even a small contribution, added to other small contributions, can turn into a great big contribution.  It is also a great way for our students to help our local community. If you would like to contribute items you can send them with your child beginning Monday, November 30th through Friday, December 11th.
Items for the Red Wagon:
Toothbrushes and toothpaste
Socks and hats for the winter
Individually wrapped food items
Or
Non-perishable food

School Pictures

All of our students had their photos taken, both individually and as a group.  Douglas will soon send us a private link so you can view all the photos online.  Then pick your favorite and he will print them and deliver them back to the school.  If you would like to order more, or have him take your family photos, you can contact him directly at douglas@douglasfrierott.com.

Outside Time

We still spend lots of time outside.  As the weather gets cold and wet we may be inside longer each day but will continue to have drop-off and pick-up outside.  Please make sure your child has warm clothes to make them comfortable.

Winter Session

Our fall session ends November 20th.  We will have the week of  Thanksgiving off and then begin our winter session, November 30th.  The winter session runs November 30th to February 26th.  Hands On will be closed during the winter session on these days, December 21-January 1st, January 18th and February 15th.   Please let me know by November 6th if you would like to continue as is, or if you need to make any changes to your child’s schedule.  The monthly winter tuition will be the same as the fall session.

What if my child has a runny nose?  And other confusing COVID questions…

Thank you to everyone for following all of our COVID safety guidelines.  We really appreciate your honesty and prioritizing health and safety.
Here are the rules about staying out of school if your child is sick or someone in your family has been exposed to COVID.

1. Has the adult or child been exposed to a person with a positive case of COVID-19 in the past 14 days?

2. Has the adult or child been exposed to a person with a presumptive case of COVID-19 in the past 14 days? • A “presumptive” case means the person was exposed to some one with COVID-19 and the presumptive adult or child showed symptoms in the past 10 days.

If they answered yes to either question 1 or 2, the child or adult must quarantine for 14 days.
The 14-day quarantine starts on the day that child or adult last had contact with the COVID-19 case.
The 14-day quarantine cannot be shortened by getting a negative COVID-19 test, or by getting a note from a medical professional.

3. Is the adult or child experiencing unusual cough, shortness of breath, or fever? “Unusual cough” means something not normal for this person (e.g., allergies, asthma).

If yes to question 3, that person must be excluded from the program for 10 days, and 24 hours symptom-free. With regard to cough and shortness of breath only, if the person has been checked by a medical professional and is cleared, they can remain in or return to the program following the documented direction of the medical professional. Anyone with a fever of 100.4 Fahrenheit is excluded.

 4. Does the child or adult have symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, headache, sore throat, or rash?

If yes to question 4, that person must be excluded as follows:
• If seen by a medical professional and is cleared, they can remain in or return to the program following the documented direction of the medical professional.
• If not seen by a medical professional, they may return 24 hours after resolution of symptoms.
Runny noses are tricky, but if a child has a runny nose it could be a common cold, and since we want to make sure no one else catches a cold this year, it is best to keep kids home until the symptoms have cleared up.
